Why did Biden Declare Genocide in Sudan?
Two weeks before leaving office, the Biden administration declared that one of the leading militias in Sudan - the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF - has committed genocide. They followed-up by sanctioning the leader of the RSF and 7 UAE companies and an individual procuring weapons for it. Nearly two years into this horrific conflict, this is an important declaration and a big deal. A statement of this kind is legally binding under international law, requiring the declarer to prevent more atrocities and punish the perpetrators. So then, why was it done at the last minute? How Will the U.S. Respond?
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE WORLD THIS WEEK? Should you put salt in your tea? American scientist Michelle Francl recommended putting a pinch of salt in your tea to cut the bitterness, and basically the Brits lost it - calling the idea “criminal,” and “absolute craziness.” Thankfully the U.S. Embassy stepped in to save the day and prevent the special relationship from landing in hot water. Ha, get it? A lot happening in the Middle East…an Iran-backed group attacked a U.S. military outpost in Jordan, killing three U.S. soldiers and injuring at least 40. How will President Biden respond and could it escalate things further? Separately, Israel and Hamas continue to negotiate the next truce and hostage-prisoner swap, and countries have suspended funding to the UN Relief & Works Agency (UNRWA) following allegations that some employees participated in the October 7 terrorist attack. And the International Court of Justice came out with interim provisional measures as it examines South Africa’s case against Israel, so we explain what that means. Russia accused Ukraine of shooting down an airplane allegedly carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, but Ukraine denies part of Russia’s narrative. The two sides were still able to exchange hundreds of prisoners of war a week later. And as negotiations over Ukraine aid get more tense on Capitol Hill, President Biden and Chancellor Scholz will meet on February 9 to discuss how to move forward. The UN has announced that Iran will lead the Conference on Disarmament starting in March! Given Iran’s effort to advance its nuclear program, who better to lead this conference?! (you can smell the sarcasm I’m sure.) How did Iran become leader of this Conference and what does it mean? Finally, we talk to Ben Wittes, editor–in-chief of Lawfare and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, about his #specialmilitaryoperations against Russian embassies worldwide, and how his campaign to basically “be annoying,” won him a Golden Heart award from Ukrainian President Zelensky. You can learn more about his project at @DogShirtTV and his blog, Dog Shirt Daily. Is Senator Menendez working for the Egyptian Government?! Do republicans support Ukraine aid?
We start off this week with Canadian Parliament saluting a Naz!? Turns out the Canadian speaker brought in a Ukrainian Veteran who fought against the Russians in WWII and praised him as Ukrainian President Zelensky visited the Parliament. Everyone in government makes mistakes, but how on earth did this guy get vetted? New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez has been accused by federal prosecutors for accepting bribes from the Egyptian government in exchange for influencing US foreign policy towards Egypt. He maintains he’s innocent, but Democrats have called on him to resign, and these allegations are quite major. After his visit to Washington DC last week, President Zelensky walked away with a $325 million aid package, including long-range missiles (ATACMS). As aid for Ukraine will become more challenging throughout the election year, where do each of the republican candidates stand on support for Ukraine? North Korea has released US soldier Travis King after he ran across the South Korean border into North Korea a few weeks ago. Why was Travis King released, and what does this mean for the US-North Korea relationship? Ten of thousands of Armenians have fled Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan struck the area and took control over it in a Russia-mediated ceasefire. Is this ethnic cleansing, and what is at stake for Artsakh Armenians and what message does this send to dictators everywhere? Vladimir Kara-Murza has been taken to a maximum-security prison in Siberia and placed in a punishment cell. We feature his brave and inspiring wife, EVGENIA KARA-MURZA who has taken on his work fighting for democracy and human rights in Russia and who is tirelessly advocating for his release. Is the Democratic Republic of Congo on the Brink of War?
M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, have encircled the town of Sake in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), risking cutting off humanitarian aid to refugees who live in Goma and elsewhere. The U.S. has called on M23 to cease fire and on Rwanda to remove its troops and missile defense systems from the area immediately, but Rwanda has refused. The DRC is now at risk of a major war breaking out and the UN Security Council has asked the international community to help end the fighting there, but will it work? Why is there war in Congo and why is Rwanda involved? More importantly - why is this happening now and what is the U.S.-Rwanda relationship?
